Cashu Wallet

Cashu

Cashu is ecash — digital cash that lives inside your extension. Once you have it, nobody can trace it back to you. No account. No login. No server watching your transactions.

How it works

Cashu tokens are like digital bills. You receive them from a mint (a service that issues ecash), and they're stored locally in the extension, encrypted. When you spend them, the mint verifies and reissues tokens — but it can't see who spent what.

Setting up

Buho Jump creates a Cashu wallet automatically when you first open the extension. It connects to a default mint. You can change the mint or add additional mints from the options page.

Sending payments

Cashu wallets can pay Lightning invoices. The mint converts your ecash tokens to a Lightning payment on the fly. From your perspective, it works just like any other wallet.

Receiving

Create a Lightning invoice from the receive screen. When someone pays it, the mint issues new tokens to your wallet.

Backup & restore

Your Cashu tokens can be backed up to Nostr relays (encrypted). If you reinstall the extension or move to a new browser, you can restore from relays.

Go to Options > Wallets > Cashu Backup to export or restore.

Why Cashu?

  • Privacy — The mint can't link your payments together
  • Offline-capable — Tokens are stored locally, not on a server
  • No KYC — No identity verification needed
  • Portable — Export tokens and import them anywhere

Trade-offs

  • You trust the mint to honor the tokens (custodial at the mint level)
  • Token denominations can create small amounts of "dust"
  • Mints may have fees for minting and melting
